3 Instructions that Preserve the Church’s Testimony

Topic: Church Passage: 2 Thessalonians 3:6–3:18
In this sermon podcast on 2 Thessalonians 3:6-18, Pastor Brent offers 3 “instructions” to the church that preserve her testimony in the world.
Once again, Paul must confront this loving church. Part of the reason Paul wrote this second letter was due to the fact that some in the church were being rebelliously lazy. As chapter 3 indicates, Paul had most likely received a messenger from the church while he remained at Corinth. One aspect of the report from this messenger was the continued idleness of some in the church.
Paul wastes no time in directly confronting this sin. In this last section, Paul calls the church to exercise its duty to discipline these sinning believers according to the principles of Matthew 18. As he calls them to be faithful, he gives the church three final instructions that will secure this church’s holiness and their testimony in the world.
No doubt Paul desires that these sinning believers repent. This is a goal of the church discipline process. However, church discipline is also intended to maintain the purity and testimony of the church. A church that allows sins to continue in its midst will dishonor Christ and marginalize its testimony in the world.
