3 Anchor Points of Hope
September 18, 2016 Speaker: Brent Small
Topic: Hope Passage: 2 Thessalonians 1:6–1:10
In this sermon podcast on 2 Thessalonians 1:6-10, Pastor Brent directs us to 3 “anchor points” of hope that strengthen our endurance in the face of persecution and suffering.
The prosperity gospel movement teaches that if one comes to Jesus by faith He will bring health, wealth, success and peace in this life. This has been the message of the charismatic movement, word of faith movement and televangelists for nearly 50 years.
If the Thessalonian church was presented the message of today’s prosperity gospel, they would be offended! The Thessalonian church, from the moment they received and believed the gospel, experienced anything but their best life now.
This precious church continued to suffer persecution and affliction from their faith. They did not prosper in any earthly way. But the Thessalonians did prosper spiritually and eternally. In the face of persecution their faith exploded with growth, their love grew greater and their enduring hope grew even stronger.
However, Paul knew the suffering for this church was not going to end. They were going to continue to suffer for their faith and he must anchor their hope to precious truths about the justice of God and how God would mete out His justice in the future.
For the Thessalonians, and all believers, our hope must be anchored in God’s promises concerning the future so that our endurance in the present will be strengthened and renewed in order to face persecution to the glory of God.
