Matters of the Heart, Pt. 1

Topic: Heart Passage: Jeremiah 17:1–17:11
In this sermon podcast on Jeremiah 17:1-11, Pastor Brent reveals three “spiritual matters” concerning the heart that reveal its need for redemption.
Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. More people die of heart disease than cancer, pneumonia and accidents combined. Heart disease is a serious problem that is often fatal for the individual. However, physical heart disease is only a picture of the spiritual heart disease that every man must face.
You may never experience disease of your physical heart. However, every man is born with the heart disease known as sin. From conception, the human heart, the inner man that includes the heart, mind, will and conscience is corrupted by sin. The heart is enslaved to sin and is in desperate need of redemption.
In Jeremiah 17, we find one of the most compelling descriptions of the depth of depravity and corruption of the heart through the example of the Judeans. This passage illuminates the heart’s desperate condition and its greatest need which can only be accomplished by God. The passage leaves little hope, but later in Jeremiah’s ministry we find hope through God’s promise of the New Covenant where God promises to redeem the sinful heart by the power of the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ.
