Jesus, Lord of the Sabbath, Pt. 1
December 8, 2013 Speaker: Brent Small
Passage: John 5:1–5:18
In this sermon podcast on John 5:1-18, Pastor Brent offers three “elements” of Jesus’ declaration that He is equal with the Father so that you might possess true, saving belief in Jesus Christ.
The meaning of “true” or “saving” belief in Jesus is a central theme in the gospel of John. In chapter 4 of his gospel, John records two encounters that help to define true belief. The Samaritans respond to Jesus with true belief; however, when Jesus returns to Galilee He exposes the faulty belief of the Jews.
Moving into chapter 5, these encounters are left behind, but they are still visible in the rear-view mirror. A central theme of chapter 5 is still “true” belief. What we learn in chapter 5 is that true belief that truly saves is belief that embraces Jesus as God, equal with the Father. The Samaritans embraced Jesus identity but the Jews are yet to follow suit.
As Jesus returns to Jerusalem for another feast, He performs another miraculous sign that then gives Him the platform to declare His true identity to the Jews. As this story unfolds, we see Jesus declare His identity in a unique and powerful way and discover the Jewish response. Will they respond as the Samaritans?
In this message Pastor Brent offers three “elements” of Jesus’ declaration that He is equal with the Father.
