An Introduction to the Gospel of John
June 9, 2013 Speaker: Brent Small
Passage: John 1:1–1:1
In this sermon podcast, Pastor Brent offers 5 “key observations” so that you can unlock the truth of God’s Word from the Gospel of John.
Any serious study of the Bible seeks to discover the original meaning of the biblical text. No one pens a letter without an intended meaning. Every biblical author wrote with a purpose and a specific meaning; and, it is part of the Bible student’s responsibility to discover that meaning so that he can apply it to his life. Far too often in our post-modern culture people bypass this process and just try to interpret the Bible through their own experiential grid. This approach dishonors the Word of God by not seeking to understand what God intended to convey through the biblical authors.
As we launch into a study of the Gospel of John, Pastor Brent takes the opportunity at the outset to identify some key contextual observations concerning John’s gospel so that we can truly understand its message and meaning. These observations include the author, his purpose, repeated themes, emphasized themes, Old Testament theology and this gospel’s relationship to the synoptic gospels.
