Topic: Church Passage: Acts 20:17–20:28
In this sermon podcast, Pastor Brent defines the importance of church membership for Cascades Bible Church by considering membership from both the perspective of the local church collectively and also the believer individually.
Surveying the church throughout evangelicalism you will find a variety of beliefs concerning a formal church membership process in the local church. Even surveying the churches in your own community will produce a variety of beliefs that might range from confusion, to indifference to outright resistance. Some might argue that the Bible never commands me to become a member of a local church. However, this kind of thinking misses the theological importance of membership as it relates to the New Testament’s definition of the “church” and also its clear teaching on the believer’s new identity in Christ as a member of the body of Christ.
In this sermon, Pastor Brent defines church membership, when adhering to biblical principles, is a process that produces a spiritually healthy interdependent redeemed assembly of believers. This definition takes membership and links its importance for the church and its importance for the believer and demonstrates how they work together to produce a local church that is true to its New Testament definition.
