Purposes of the Local Church, Pt. 1
August 12, 2012 Speaker: Brent Small
Topic: Church Passage: Ephesians 1:4–1:6
In this sermon podcast Pastor Brent reminds us that one of the purposes of the local church is the worship of God.
Has God redeemed His people for specific purposes? Has He gathered them into the local church to fulfill a specific mission and purpose? As we gaze into the landscape of the local church in our day, we might conclude that God has redeemed His church and then left it to decide what its purpose and mission actually is meant to be.
However, at Cascades Bible, we believe that God has saved His church to fulfill specific purposes on the earth and that He has detailed those purposes in His Word. God has given us an authoritative guide on the purposes for the local church and we must endeavor to discover those purposes and fulfill them in our local church body.
Central to God’s plan of redemption is worship. In Ephesians 1:4-6, the Apostle Paul states that God has redeemed His people “to the praise of the glory of His grace.” Worship is a central purpose and priority of the church. The church was saved to gather together for the worship of God.
The question then becomes, “What qualifies worship, in the corporate context, to be worship?” In this message, Pastor Brent offers the first three of six “elements” of corporate worship that enable the church to fulfill its purpose of worship.
