God’s Recipe for a Healthy Church, Pt. 2
Topic: Church Passage: 1 Thessalonians 5:14–5:15
In this sermon podcast on First Thessalonians 5:14-15, Pastor Brent highlights 5 “methods” through which church members can care for one another.
As the Apostle Paul begins his concluding exhortations to this young church he turns his attention to the ongoing spiritual health of the church. Beginning in First Thessalonians 5:12 and extending all the way to verse 22, Paul delivers God’s recipe for a healthy church. This recipe features key relationships that are found within the church: 1) the relationship between church leader and church member, 2) the relationship amongst church members and 3) the relationship of the individual church member with his or her God.
First, in verses 12-13, the Apostle teaches that a spiritually healthy church is one where the relationship between the church leaders or elders and the church members is marked by peace. Now, in verses 14-15, Paul commands the Thessalonian church members to care for one another. If this young church was to be a spiritually healthy church that would foster their spiritual growth together, the members themselves must reach out and care for one another’s spiritual needs.
The church must be more than a social gathering or another institution that sponsors community or moral programs. Church members are intertwined together as the body of Christ and must exercise soul quality care for one another.
