God’s Recipe for a Healthy Church, Pt. 1
Topic: Church Passage: 1 Thessalonians 5:12–5:13
In this sermon podcast on First Thessalonians 5:12-13, Pastor Brent highlights 3 “ingredients” that foster peace between members and leaders in the local church.
At the midpoint of this final chapter of First Thessalonians, the Apostle Paul begins his concluding exhortations to this young church. Paul’s attention turns to the ongoing spiritual health of the church.
Beginning in First Thessalonians 5:12 and extending all the way to verse 22, Paul delivers God’s recipe for a healthy church. This recipe features key relationships that are found within the church: 1) the relationship between church leader and church member, 2) the relationship amongst church members and 3) the relationship of the individual church member with his or her God.
How do these relationships produce a spiritually healthy church? First, in verses 12-13, the Apostle teaches that a spiritually healthy church is one where the relationship between the church leaders or elders and the church members is marked by peace. Paul commanded the Thessalonian church members and church leaders to maintain peace in their relationships. However, Paul accomplished more than that.
In these two verses, the Apostle gives us the ingredients that produce this peace. These ingredients include: mutual appreciation, loving esteem and abiding peace. A healthy church begins with peaceful relationships between leaders and members.
