5 Prayer Requests of a Thriving Church
Topic: Prayer Passage: 2 Thessalonians 3:1–3:5
In this sermon podcast on 2 Thessalonians 3:1-5, Pastor Brent exhorts us with 5 “prayer requests” of a thriving church that help the church advance her gospel mission.
As Paul closes his second letter to the Thessalonian church, he turns to the importance of prayer. However, Paul does not make a case for why they as believers should pray, he instructs them in specific prayer requests.
From chapter 1, Paul reminds us that the Thessalonian church was a model church and that she was thriving in her faith, love and hope ignited by the gospel. They had become a model and testimony to those around the world of what true saving faith and true conversion really look like. They had turned from idols to serve a living and true God. Their transformation through the gospel was dramatic and powerful and continued to thrive.
Paul does not want this progress of the gospel to slow down. He wants the gospel to continue making progress in the world and he wants this thriving church to pray for that very thing. As Jesus commands in Matthew 28, the church is commissioned to take the gospel to the world and make disciples. Thus, Paul now exhorts the Thessalonians with five prayer requests that put God to work for the sake of the gospel and its continued progress in the world.
