Prayer in the Fire
Topic: Prayer Passage: 2 Thessalonians 1:11–1:12
In this sermon podcast on 2 Thessalonians 1:11-12, Pastor Brent instructs us with 3 “prayer requests” in the face of persecution so that we will glorify the Lord Jesus Christ.
The Thessalonian church was the chaparral of the New Testament. They continually suffered the fire of persecution but in the midst of that fire their faith, love and hope exploded with new growth. They were not prospering in a worldly sense but spiritually their lives were teaming with new fruit of faith.
As Paul considered this church and how they remained under the pressure of persecution, he strengthens their faith by directing them to consider the future. When Christ would return at His Second Coming, the Lord would provide relief from the persecution they faced and would bring judgment on their persecutors.
Not only would relief and judgment come, but Paul also directs their attention to the glory of the Lord that would be revealed and that it would be mirrored in the Thessalonians and all believers.
It is this concept of Christ’s glory that causes Paul to burst forth in prayer for this model church.
As Paul prays, he leaves for us a model of how to pray in the midst of persecution. How should we pray as we face persecution? Paul answers this question for us.
