3 Purifying Results of Suffering
Topic: Suffering Passage: 2 Thessalonians 1:1–1:5
In this sermon podcast on 2 Thessalonians 1:1-5, Pastor Brent uncovers 3 “purifying results” of suffering that make us worthy of the kingdom of God.
Chaparral is a scrub oak plant that thrives in a dry desert-like climate. Much of the hills of Southern California are covered with Chaparral. However the deserts of Southern California are prone to wildfires. In spite of these fires the chaparral thrives and survives. How? The chaparral is designed to explode with new growth at the cue of a fire.
The Thessalonian believers and the Thessalonian church are the “chaparral” of the New Testament. As they continued to endure the fire of suffering from persecutions and afflictions, their faith, love and hope were greatly enlarged and expanded. They did not shrink away from God nor were they destroyed by the fire of persecution. Instead, they grew stronger in their faith and walk with Christ.
Tucked away in the amazingly powerful opening of this letter is a challenging and comforting message to all believers. Persecution and affliction will come, but we, like the chaparral, will flourish with new growth in our faith. Furthermore, the very persecutions and afflictions that we face demonstrate that God is just and He purifies His children to make us worthy of His kingdom.
