Matters of the Heart, Pt. 4
Topic: Heart Passage: 1 Thessalonians 3:11–3:13
In this sermon podcast on 1 Thessalonians 3:11-13; Pastor Brent teaches 3 “aspects” of love that fuel the purification of the heart from sin.
Having developed strategies that defend the heart against the storms of the Christian life, in this final installment of this four-part series we look to the means by which the heart is purified from sin.
While every redeemed heart stands justified in God’s sight through the righteousness of Christ, that same redeemed heart begins the process of sanctification. In sanctification, the Christian strives to purify one’s heart from sin in his or her experience. Sanctification seeks to live what justification has pronounced us to be.
Thus, the Christian is actively seeking a pure heart. But by what means does he or she pursue that pure heart? In John 17:17, the Lord prays that the Father would sanctify the believer in the truth. However, the truth of God is not the only means of sanctification or of purifying our heart from sin.
As the Apostle Paul prays for the Thessalonian believers as recorded in chapter 3, he prays that the Lord would increase their love for others and cause it to abound and overflow. What does he hope the end result of that love will be? Paul’s desire is that as they prioritize and exercise love, this love will then be the means to purify the heart in holiness.
