The Crucified King, Pt. 1
Topic: Crucified Passage: John 19:17–19:30
In this sermon podcast on John 19:17-30, Pastor Brent unfolds the first of six “coronating elements” of Christ’s crucifixion that will lead you to exalt him as king in your life.
The Jewish religious leaders have now backed Pilate into a corner. Their final attempt to compel Pilate to crucify Jesus succeeds. They challenge Pilate with a charge of disloyalty. If Pilate releases Jesus then he is saying that he is a friend of another king and, by implication, betraying Caesar. Pilate now has no choice, and turns Jesus over to be crucified.
All four gospels record the events of the crucifixion of Christ. As is consistent with John’s entire gospel, John gives us unique information when compared to the synoptic gospels concerning the death of Christ. That unique information serves a specific purpose in that John again exalts Christ as the King of the Jews, the King of Israel.
Kings throughout human history are installed on their respective throne by being coronated. The cross would be the coronation of Christ. Through his greatest humiliation would come his exaltation and coronation as King of the Jews.
