2 Petitions that Lead to Joy, Pt. 1
Topic: Joy Passage: John 17:6–17:19
In this sermon podcast on John 17:6-19, Pastor Brent provides two “petitions” that must be prayed to the Father so that the joy of Christ might be possessed to the fullest measure in our lives.
Throughout Jesus’ instruction of the disciples in the Upper Room Discourse, Jesus has been preparing these men for their future ministry in light of His departure. In the midst of His teaching Jesus reveals that, at least in part, His desire is that the disciples possess His joy and possess it in the fullest measure. The goal of His teaching and the culmination of their Christian life and ministry was to experience His joy. They were to be completely satisfied in Him and His joy.
As Jesus now prays for His disciples in the High Priestly Prayer, Jesus again returns to this theme of joy. In fact, Jesus prays two specific petitions on behalf of the disciples so that they will possess His joy.
While in these verses, Jesus prays specifically for His disciples, we know that Jesus wants all believers to possess His joy. What lessons do we learn from His prayer for the disciples that enable us to receive and enjoy Christ’s joy?
Jesus’ prayer for the disciples becomes a model of prayer for believers. As believers take the model given by Jesus as recorded here by John, they will find the path and instrument to possessing Christ’s joy in the fullest measure.
