Jesus Prays for His Glory
Topic: Glory Passage: John 17:1–17:5
In this sermon podcast on John 17:1-5, Pastor Brent offers three “facets” of Jesus’ prayer to the Father through which He petitions the Father to restore His pre-incarnate glory.
Having finished His preparation of the disciples for His departure, Jesus will now end the Upper Room Discourse in prayer. This prayer is often referred to as the “High Priestly Prayer” because Jesus prays on behalf of Himself, the disciples and the church.
As Jesus begins the prayer, His focus in on Himself. What is the focus of His prayer? Jesus prays for His own glory. In fact, Jesus prays that the Father will restore Jesus’ former glory, the glory He had with the Father in eternity past.
On the surface, His request may seem self-centered and self-exalting? How are we to understand Jesus’ request in light of the cross? By praying for His own glory, Jesus is actually praying for a greater glory. In this message, Pastor Brent seeks to unfold Jesus’ prayer and the greater glory that He is seeking.
