The Good Shepherd, Pt. 2
Passage: John 10:1–10:10
In this sermon podcast on John 10:1-10, Pastor Brent offers the second of three “distinguishing marks” of a shepherd that reveal Jesus as the true Shepherd of Israel.
At the end of John chapter 9, Jesus has just confronted the Pharisees about their spiritual blindness. Now in chapter 10, Jesus takes the immediate opportunity to demonstrate that they are unfit as the “shepherds of Israel.”
For centuries the work of a shepherd was the primary imagery for the spiritual leaders of God’s people. Certainly in Jesus day this imagery was still fresh in the minds of the Israelites. There was no doubt that the religious elite that included the Pharisees saw themselves as the shepherds of Israel.
But, were they truly the shepherds of Israel? In chapter 10, Jesus answers this question by giving us three distinguishing marks of a shepherd that will reveal the true Shepherd of Israel.
