For His Glory, Pt. 1
Passage: John 9:1–9:12
In this sermon podcast Pastor Brent offers 3 “glorious elements” of a powerful miracle that served a powerful purpose.
Jesus has just evaded an attempted stoning at the hands of the religious leaders. He has declared and taught, at the Feast of Tabernacles, that he is God. In fact, at the end of chapter 8, he used the specific name for God translated “I am” and applied it to himself.
Jesus was the Son of God, God in the flesh. He was also the Messiah who was sent by the Father to open the eyes of the blind, c.f. Isaiah 9:2; 42:6. Now in chapter 9, this prophecy will be fulfilled. As Jesus moves through Jerusalem he passes by a man who has been blind from birth. The disciples ask him if the man or his parents’ sin was to blame for his blindness. Jesus had a different response.
This man’s blindness was under the sovereign purposes of God so that His works might be displayed in him. The question becomes, “What works of the Father is Jesus referring to?”
In this sermon Pastor Brent offers three “glorious elements” of this powerful miracle that served a powerful purpose: to display the works of the Father.
