The Great I AM
Passage: John 8:48–8:59
In this sermon podcast on John 8:48-59 Pastor Brent offers 3 “ways” that Jesus seeks to glorify the Father ultimately declaring that He is God.
Jesus’ exchange with the Jews in Jerusalem that followed the conclusion of the Feast of Tabernacles is now drawing to a close. Jesus has declared His deity throughout the discourse in chapter 8 but the Jews have continued to be confused by His statements.
The exchange becomes more hostile as Jesus has now confronted the Jews with the reality that they are not spiritual descendants of Abraham. He has identified that their actions demonstrate that they are of their father the devil.
This obviously does not sit well with the Jews. Therefore, in a final effort to malign Jesus and His own heritage, the Jews accuse Jesus of being a Samaritan and having a demon. Jesus responds to this charge in a very profound way. Not only does Jesus outright declare that He is God, He does so by revealing three ways that He, as the Son of God who is fully God, seeks to glorify His Father.
