The Bread of Life, Pt. 4
Passage: John 6:41–6:59
In this sermon podcast on John 6:41-59, Pastor Brent calls us to embrace four “eternal” blessings received through belief in Jesus, so that you might be completely satisfied in Him.
As Jesus continues to preach to a crowd of Galilean Jews in the synagogue in Capernaum, He now expands the metaphoric expression that He is the “bread of life.” The Jews were seeking bread that would not satisfy. They had seen Jesus healing power and miraculous ability to feed them from nothing. They wanted to continue receiving these blessings and wanted Jesus to usher in His kingdom and relieve them from Roman oppression.
However, Jesus offers a different quality of life and a superior bread. Jesus challenges the Jews to believe upon Him, receiving Him as the bread of life that leads to eternal life. Not surprisingly, the Jews take issue with Jesus’ message. They do not accept His claim to be bread that came down from heaven. They see Him only as the son of Joseph and not the Son of God who is fully God, equal with the Father.
As they grumble amongst themselves, Jesus takes the bread of life metaphor and now applies it to His work on the cross through which they can gain forgiveness of sins. As He extends His teaching, not only does He offer eternal life accomplished through His cross work, but He also expounds for us as believers the blessings of the life He gives that will bring true satisfaction to our souls.
In this message, Pastor Brent continues to unfold the message of Jesus in John 6 and also call us to embrace the blessings of eternal life that will truly satisfy our souls.
