Jesus, the Giver of Life

December 22, 2013 Speaker: Brent Small Series: Gospel of John

Passage: John 5:24–5:30

In this sermon podcast on John 5:24-30, Pastor Brent delivers two “aspects” of eternal life given by Jesus that demonstrate his equality with the Father.

Jesus healing of a man on the Sabbath opened the door for him to declare that he is equal with the Father. He made this declaration to the Jewish leaders, ultimately revealing his true identity. This declaration made by Jesus angered the Jewish leaders and they were seeking to kill him.

Jesus understood the radical nature of his claim; however, Jesus never intended to make himself out to be a god equal to the Father yet independent from him. Therefore, picking up the story in John 5:24, Jesus now explains that he is equal with the Father because he is the “giver of life.” However, in this passage Jesus has a specific type of life in mind, that of eternal life.

How does Jesus give this eternal life? In this passage, Jesus teaches that he gives his people eternal life through resurrection. He has two specific resurrections in mind: spiritual and physical. Both of these resurrections are received by belief in his word and in the Father who sent him.
