Jesus, Lord of the Sabbath, Pt. 2
Passage: John 5:18–5:24
In this sermon podcast on John 5:18-24, Pastor Brent offers four “marks” of Jesus’ relationship with the Father so that you might believe that He is God and receive eternal life.
Jesus healing of a man on the Sabbath opened the door for him to declare that he is equal with the Father. He made this declaration to the Jewish leaders, ultimately revealing his true identity. This declaration made by Jesus angered the Jewish leaders and they were seeking to kill him.
Looking at the declaration made by Jesus, the Jewish leaders had a legitimate reason to be concerned. Any man claiming to be God was a blasphemous claim that maligned the God they served. They were strict mono-theists and Jesus claim in their minds meant that he was a god equal in deity with the Father but independent and in competition with him. Jesus claim was ultimately poly-theistic in nature.
Jesus understood the radical nature of his claim; however, Jesus never intended to make himself out to be a god equal to the Father yet independent from him. Therefore, picking up the story in John 5:19, Jesus now explains to the Jewish leaders that he and the Father are equal, meaning that they are united as one in a Father-Son relationship.
