Jesus Declares His Identity, Pt. 1

Passage: John 4:1–4:26
In this sermon podcast on John 4:1-26; Pastor Brent uncovers three “dramatic assertions” made by Jesus through which He declares Himself to be the Son of God.
The purpose of John’s gospel is three-fold: 1) to declare that Jesus is the Son of God, 2) that Jesus alone possesses eternal life and 3) that eternal life is obtained by believing upon Jesus. As one approaches the account of Jesus’ meeting with the Samaritan woman at the well and seeks to understand its meaning he must view it through the lens of John’s purpose for the entire gospel.
The account of the meeting at the well is loaded with biblical truth and biblical themes. There are at least twelve major topics that could be mined out of this account and preached from this text. However, there is a major theme and point and it is found in a statement made by Jesus in John 4:26. In this verse Jesus, from His own lips, declares that He is the Messiah, the Son of God. This is the point that Jesus is driving the woman to in the conversation and this is the reason why John recorded this account in his gospel.
Jesus is the Son of God. As he interacts with the Samaritan woman at the well Jesus makes assertion after assertion that lead to His own declaration of His true identity, the Son of God.
